PROVIDENCE -- Medical marijuana stores in Rhode Island would have to install security systems and teach patients how to safely take the drug under new rules proposed by the state.
The draft regulations announced Tuesday by the Department of Health come after lawmakers voted to allow three nonprofit stores to sell marijuana to chronically ill patients in a state program.

State lawmakers legalized medical marijuana for pain relief three years ago. Rhode Island became the third state in the country this year to allow marijuana sales to patients.
The drug remains illegal under federal law, but the Obama administration has said it won't target marijuana dispensaries that follow state law.
Members of the public can comment on the proposed rules at an Aug. 25 meeting.
