WEST GREENWICH, R.I. – There are some good cows in West Greenwich. If you don’t believe me, then ask the Breene family.

The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management named the Breene Hollow Farm as the 2009 Outstanding Dairy Farm of the Year.

The award is given out each year by the New England Green Pastures Committee, which is made up of state and federal agricultural offices and farm organizations.

The Breene family will be honored at the Eastern States Exposition, aka The Big E, in West Springfield, Massachusetts in September.

Kevin Breene, who is also involved in local West Greenwich government, began the farm with 20 cows at his parents' home in 1977, then purchased some land in 1980 to get the farm going.

There are currently 90 cows, 20 acres of corn, and 45 acres of hay land and pasture at the site.

The Breenes are involved in the 4-H program, the Exeter Grange, the Agri-Mark Co-Op, and Rhody Fresh Milk.
