NEWPORT, R.I. -- The Touro Synagogue in Newport will resume giving tours after a brief hiatus brought on by financial pressures.
The foundation that runs the nation's oldest Jewish temple laid off its last two paid staffers in March.
The chairman of the foundation board, Keith Stokes, said in a statement that the tours will resume May 3 with volunteers. The tours will initially operate between noon to 2 p.m., from Sunday through Friday.
The tour schedule will be expanded during the busier summer months.
Touro Synagogue, a National Historic Landmark, was dedicated in 1763. The tours teach visitors about the synagogue's history and the role it played in the establishment of religious freedom and toleration in America.
