PROVIDENCE -- A recount at the Rhode Island Board of Elections confirms challenger Michael Pinga as the winner of a state Senate Democratic primary in West Warwick.

The recount showed Pinga beating incumbent Sen. Stephen Alves by 17 votes. Alves, a powerful lawmaker, had served as chairman of the Senate Finance Committee.

The recount came after the state Supreme Court on Thursday ordered election officials to recount all the provisional, mail-in and regular ballots cast in the primary.

An earlier recount showed Pinga winning by 19 votes. At the time, the board did not recount mail-in and provisional ballots.
