SMITHFIELD, R.I. -- Some ballots in Smithfield will be counted by hand because they included the name of a candidate who already dropped out.
Robert Kando, the executive director of the Rhode Island Board of Elections, said scanners at the town's seven polling locations were unable to read the outdated ballots, which had the name of a local candidate who dropped out weeks ago.
Voters were still able to pick candidates for local, state and national elections. But now the affected ballots will have to be counted manually later Tuesday.
Kando said the printing company began printing batches of correct ballots. Five teams were dispatched to take new ballots to polling stations.
WPRO-AM reported Tuesday that a polling place in East Providence has been closed as a precaution after an unidentified white powder was found under a table. The substance was discovered at the Grove Avenue Elementary School.
