It's a problem that's been talked about for decades: How do you improve Rhode Island's urban school districts?
Several months ago, Gov. Don Carcieri formed a task force to come up with some ideas. Among the suggestions, longer school days and offering alternative ways for high school students to earn a diploma.
The state has a big stake in improving urban education. It is estimated that by 2020, one in five members of the state's workforce will come from the urban school system.
Currently, about one in three students in urban districts can read at grade level.
