Shape Up RI was started seven years ago by the Brown University medical student Rajiv Kimar.
His idea was to get people invested in their health through teamwork.
It's time to enroll again, and it's open to all who live or work in the state.
Brown University has a number of teams, so does major sponsor Blue Cross Blue Shield of Rhode Island.
"I'm going to be part of a team this year and we've ratcheted up the attention and competition in the company this year by having my team compete against other teams inside the company," said Blue Cross Blue Shield CEO Peter Andruszkiewicz.
"Shape Up costs a lot of money and because of Blue Cross and Blue Shield's involvement, we only have to charge people half price which is $20 instead of $39," said Ray Rickman of Shape Up RI.
With the enrollment fee comes a Shape Up RI pedometer and a wealth of tips along the way to help keep you motivated throughout the 12-week competition. This year, you can sign up for different categories -- pedometer steps, exercise minutes, fruits and vegetables and weight loss.
"Some people don't need to do weight loss. Now unfortunately that's a very small number of people because 67 percent of Rhode Islanders are obese or overweight," Rickman said.
This is how the program works. A team captain signs up then invites others to be on his or her team. There can be as few as five or as many as 11 on each team. Then you come up with team name.
"We're still deciding. I'm voting for BMI Busters," Andruszkiewicz said.
NBC 10 has a team, called Team Ten Steppers.
The competition kicks off Feb. 6.
