Preparations for StyleWeek were under way in Providence on Thursday as designers, models and stylists gear up for the events centered at the Biltmore Hotel.
Massachusetts College of Art and Design graduate Marcel Plante is from New Bedford.
"I love having my own line, but just getting out of school I need to be able to be more practical and really learn the actual steps of the fashion industry by working for a company," Plante said.
StyleWeek Providence, now in its third year, brings together fashionistas from the eastern half of the U.S., matching buyers with talent that wouldn't necessarily be able to make the connections on their own.
"The proximity to New York and the proximity to Boston and how accessible this city is really turned me on to just realizing that this is the perfect location to have something of this stature," said Rosanna Ortiz Sinel of StyleWeek.
Plante said he's always been fascinated by German society between World War I and World War II called the Weimar Republic.
"Everything was so glamorous and sort of dark glamour, and society was more accepting of everything," Plante said. "Almost before its time, I guess you'd say."
While many fashion shows seem to highlight over-the-top looks, Plante said he sees the practical side of his designs.
"A lot of the pieces can be mixed into a more casual wardrobe, so you wouldn't necessarily have to wear the entire ensemble," he said.
StyleWeek starts Sunday and runs every night through Saturday.
