URI animal doc named vet of year

»  Comments | Post a Comment

A University of Rhode Island animal doctor has been named veterinarian of the year by the regional chapter of a national animal association.

David Serra was given the honor last month by the Southern New England chapter of the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science. He maintains a veterinary practice in Richmond but also serves as an attending veterinarian at URI.

In that role, he looks after everything from rats and mice used in research labs to livestock at the university's Peckham Farm. The school says he works with researchers and the animal use committee to ensure that all its animals are properly cared for according to U.S. law.

Serra, who grew up in Westerly, says he was born a veterinarian and never wanted to be anything else.
