One of the oldest churches in Rhode Island will be shutting its doors in April because of a drop in the number of pledging families.
The Providence Journal reported that the Episcopal Cathedral of St. John on North Main Street in Providence will hold its final liturgy April 22. Parishioners learned the news Sunday. Church leaders say the parish can no longer afford its expenses.
The church was known as King's Church when it was founded in 1722. It's the fourth-oldest church in the Rhode Island Episcopal diocese.
Diocese documents say the church's endowment is on track to be fully depleted in 3½ years. Church officials said a portion of the endowment will be set aside to maintain the building in case it reopens in the future.
