Albert and Elizabeth Newton have seen their fair share of Valentine's Days together.
They're both 100, and they've been married for 75 years.
"One year just followed another," Elizabeth said. "Seems to be a record today."
"How did she stand it, I don't know," Albert said.
Albert and Elizabeth are from Pawtucket. They went to high school together in Pawtucket and went on to the University of Rhode Island.
They graduated college in 1935.
"We didn't meet in Pawtucket. It was down along the bay, where we each had summer houses. That's where we, along with 15 or 20 other young kids, we all played on the beach together," Albert said.
"Every summer we would go down there," Elizabeth said. "Each of our folks had a house there."
Early on in their relationship, they said times were tough, which prevented them from getting married.
"It was 75 years ago, but it would have been sooner except we were in the midst of a very serious Depression and we couldn't put enough money together to get married and set up a house. It would have been sooner than that, I'm sure," Albert said.
In 1936, work came and within two years they were married. They survived New England hurricanes and snowstorms.
And what's their advice for making a marriage work?
"Give and take, I guess," Elizabeth said.
"Took one day at a time," Albert added.
The couple will celebrate their 75th anniversary March 20 at the Park Place Congregational Church in Pawtucket.
