When you think of the Y, working out probably comes to mind.
But the YMCA of Greater Providence is offering something else whether you're a member or not. It's a 16-week, year-long series of classes aimed at reducing the risk of developing diabetes.
"The class is specifically designed to teach them about lifestyle change. So, we focus on topics like improving their nutrition, how to become physically active, tips for dining out, things around staying motivated," said Neta Taylor-Post, who runs the Diabetes Prevention Program for the Greater Providence Y.
When you consider that one in three American adults has prediabetes, it's a program that could make a quality of life difference.
"Most of us know what we're supposed to do: eat better, exercise more. But making that happen and making it stick are the challenging aspects, and that's what we're working with," Taylor-Post said.
To take part, you need to be motivated and you need to be at risk for developing diabetes.
The program has two goals.
"To reduce their body weight by seven percent and to increase their physical activity to 150 minutes. So, these are very modest lifestyle changes. We aren't asking for cosmetic weight loss. It's weight loss to prevent diabetes. So, 7 percent weight loss. Research has shown that 7 percent weight loss there is profound health benefits," Taylor-Post said.
The YMCA of Greater Providence is currently enrolling for classes that will begin in the new year. It's $99 for YMCA of Greater Providence members and $149 for non-members.
It does not include using the facilities to work out.
