Bald may look good on a select few people, but most people prefer to have something to run their fingers through.
And while hair tonic probably won't do the trick, there have been, since ancient times, other hair loss remedies.
"There have been snake oils to grow hair since ancient Egypt. There've been actually hieroglyphics to show that there's a remedy for baldness back in the ancient Egypt days including involving donkey dung in fact. So, we have all these things that people can try. Not going to help. Not one bit," said Dr. Robert Leonard, a hair transplant surgeon.
And while there are now modern and proven ways to bring back what's lost on top, like medications, laser therapy and hair transplantation, you're better off trying to prevent it in the first place.
Leonard gave NBC 10 his top five truths and myths surrounding hair loss.
No. 1: Wearing a baseball cap or hats will cause thinning hair and loss of hair.
"Absolutely not. Wearing a hat has no impact on hair loss or hair re-growth of any sort. Genetics cause hair loss," he said.
No. 2: Exposure to chlorine in swimming pools will cause hair loss.
"Chlorine is very drying and can cause the hair to become brittle and break and it can cause hair color to change, especially a woman who bleaches her hair. She can come out green as far as having green hair, but as far as hair loss, no," Leonard said.
No. 3: Overexposure to high heat will cause hair to become brittle and fall out.
"We'll there's a big concern now with this Brazilian Keratin Blowout sort of thing where very high heat is applied to the hair and if it's not done professionally it can cause terrific damage to the hair shaft, but otherwise it doesn't cause hair to fall out," he said.
No. 4: Tight braids will cause your hair to fall out.
"Well, one of the concerns with tight braiding is something called alopecia tracking. In the long term, it can actually destroy hair. So, you see people going to the Caribbean for vacation, they come back with those pretty little braids with the beads on them, but if it's on for a short period of time, no problem. But prolonged braiding is definitely a problem," Leonard said.
No. 5: Does smoking cause hair loss?
"I tell patients it does and it's maybe a little white lie because smoking is not good for anyone," Leonard said.
Leonard said smoking, however, does cause oxygen levels to decrease.
"And the hair, every single hair follicle has its own little artery and vein, and if there's less oxygen to the hair follicle, it's not healthy," he said.
