An octopus that became something of a celebrity at the Biomes Marine Biology Center in North Kingstown has died.

Ruby was caught off Block Island in about 500 feet of water. He was named for his color.

Ruby learned how to unscrew the lid of a jar to get to food inside.

Ruby was a Narragansett Bay octopus, which has a life span of about a year.

Biomes said it expects to get a new octopus in the fall.
