NORTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. -- His name is "Ruby" and he can open a jar, underwater, all by himself.

The reason that's an impressive feat is that Ruby is a Narragansett Bay octopus, who lives at the Biomes Marine Biology Center in North Kingstown.

His keepers taught him the trick by putting treats inside the jar. First they put a crab inside, without a lid. Next, they put the lid on, but loosely. Gradually, they tightened it. And Ruby learned which direction to turn the lid, in order to get the food.

Mark Hall said Ruby is so smart, he even spots the jar in a person’s hand, from a distance, and reaches out to try to get the jar.

Ruby is about 8 months old and probably doesn’t have long to live, Hall said. This type of octopus usually has a life expectancy of only one year.
