Hendricken, LaSalle win indoor track titles

The Rhode Island Interscholastic League State Indoor Track and Field Championships were held Sunday at the University of Rhode Island.

In team competition, the Hendricken Hawks cruised to their 15th consecutive boys state title, while the LaSalle girls celebrated their third straight state title.

In individual events, Westerly’s Andrew Springer won the 3,000 meters in a meet-record time of 8:33.96 as well as the 1,500 meters with a meet-record time of 3:58.50. Hendricken’s Mike Gama, who is ranked fifth nationally, won the 25-pound weight throw with a toss of 71 feet, 1 inch. 

On the girls side, East Providence’s Erin Carmone defeated two-time defending state champion Jean Christensen of LaSalle with a time of 10:31.30. Moses Brown’s Jenna Poggi won both the 55-meter hurdles and 55-meter dash. Coventry’s Eryn Wheeler won her second straight 600 meters title with a meet-record time of 1:34.08.
