Penny makes last spring-training start

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Brad Penny offered his last audition for a spot in Boston’s regular season rotation. Francisco Liriano warmed up for his opening day start for Minnesota.

Penny gave up three runs and five hits in five innings for the Red Sox in a 7-3 loss to the Twins Thursday, while Liriano allowed one run and two hits in three innings.

Boston manager Terry Francona said Penny will probably be his fifth starter and take the mound April 12 against the Los Angeles Angels.

Liriano learned before the game he will start Monday for the Twins against the Seattle Mariners, after Scott Baker was placed on the 15-day disabled list with stiffness in his shoulder. Liriano struck out three and walked one in an abbreviated outing, because he’ll pitch in the opener on three days of rest.
