FOXBOROUGH, Mass.—New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick sees continued improvement in quarterback Matt Cassel.

Cassel led the Patriots to victory Sunday over the St. Louis Rams after New England trailed in the fourth quarter.

Belichick said Monday it was great Cassel was able to get his first win in that situation. He also said Cassel’s running ability saved a few plays when the protection broke down in Sunday’s 23-16 win.

Cassel threw for a career-high 267 yards in his sixth start of the season and in his career as backup to the injured Tom Brady.

The Patriots are tied for the AFC East lead with Buffalo at 5-2 and play at Indianapolis on Sunday night.
