FOXBOROUGH, Mass.,—The New England Patriots added safety Patrick Chung to a young defensive backfield.

The Patriots picked the hard-hitting player from Oregon with the second pick of the second round on Saturday after making two trades that dropped them out of the first round.

Chung had nine interceptions in four years in college and made two sacks as a senior.

Chung joins a secondary that includes 2007 first-round pick Brandon Meriweather and 2005 fourth-rounder James Sanders, both starting safeties. Last year the Patriots also chose defensive backs Terrence Wheatley and Jonathan Wilhite.

Saturday’s trades with Baltimore and Green Bay gave the Patriots eight picks in the first three rounds and 13 in the seven rounds of the draft.
