MANCHESTER, N.H.—Boston Red Sox right-hander Daisuke Matsuzaka allowed five runs in the first inning of a rehab start for Boston’s Double A affliate Portland on Sunday.

Matsuzuka allowed a leadoff homer among his four hits and walked three. He pitched a perfect second inning, retiring the side on nine pitches, but took the 5-3 loss in the first game of a doubleheader against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats.

Matsuzaka threw 58 pitches, 38 for strikes.

Despite struggling in the first inning, Matsuzaka reported no physical problems. He has been sidelined since June with a right shoulder strain.
