SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. - The outgoing coach of the women’s basketball team at the University of Rhode Island has apologized for the team’s record during his tenure.

Tom Garrick resigned his post on Monday. The Rams were 56-112 since he took the job in 2003.

In a written statement, Garrick said he was sorry he was unable to propel the program to greater heights.

Garrick was a star player on the URI men’s team and later played in the NBA for the Los Angeles Clippers, San Antonio Spurs, Minnesota Timberwolves and Dallas Mavericks.

URI Athletic Director Thorr Bjorn said the school would create a search committee to find a replacement.
