Best, Driscoll winners or R.I. marathon

PROVIDENCE — Drew Best of Leverett, Mass., has won the marathon at the second annual Cox Providence Rhode Races with a course-record time.

The 27-year-old Best finished at 2 hours, 35 minutes and 19 seconds on Sunday. That was 27 seconds faster than the runner-up, 40-year-old Danny Gough of Portsmouth.

Michaela Driscoll of Coventry, was the first woman across the finish line, with a time of 2 hours, 56 minutes and 14 seconds.

Thousands of runners, ranging from children to senior citizens, raced the streets of downtown Providence.

Rhode Islanders swept the half-marathon and 5-kilometer races.

The half-marathon winners were Eric Lonergan of North Kingstown and Trish Hillery of Greenville. The 5K champions were Chris Magill of Cumberland and Diana Davis of Providence.
