Town approves change in government by 1 vote

BARNSTABLE, Mass.—Residents of the Cape Cod town of Barnstable have voted to change the community’s form of government by a single vote.
Town Clerk Linda Hutchenrider told the Cape Cod Times that voters on Tuesday approved the charter ballot question 2,579-2,578. Another 232 voters that turned in ballots left the question blank.
Hutchenrider said she does not believe there is any way to recount or petition the vote, but she said she will consult with the secretary of state’s office on Wednesday.
The charter change will reduce the Town Council from 13 to 11 members starting in 2011, and allow voters to choose at-large councilors as well district councilors. Now, all councilors are elected by district.
About 17 percent of the town’s registered voters cast ballots.
