Scott Slater won Tuesday’s Democratic special primary election in House District 10 in Providence.
He is hoping to replace his father, Thomas Slater, in the General Assembly.
Slater defeated six other Democrats running for the seat. He was the party’s endorsed candidate.
Slater had 541 votes; John Kelley, 257 votes; Ana Quezada, 116; Jenny Jourdain, 68; Raymond Tomasso, 45; Ramon Perez, 36; and Raphael Colon Jr. finished with 9 votes.
He moves on to face Republican Maurice Green, as well as independents Maryelyn Alba-Acevedo, Wilbur Jennings Jr., and John Tomasso in the Nov. 10 general election.
The 34-year-old Slater is a budget analyst for the City of Providence.
House District 10 stretches from the edges of the Armory District to Roger Williams Park, according to the secretary of state.
Thomas Slater died of cancer in August. He successfully pushed for the legalization of medical marijuana in Rhode Island.
