PROVIDENCE—Rhode Island Lt. Gov. Elizabeth Roberts will seek re-election next year instead of running to replace Gov. Don Carcieri.

Roberts made the announcement Wednesday, saying she wants to continue her work to expand health care coverage as lieutenant governor.

Her campaign fundraising had seriously trailed other Democratic rivals, including Attorney General Patrick Lynch and General Treasurer Frank Caprio.

Roberts is the only woman in statewide office in Rhode Island. She never formally declared her candidacy for governor but repeatedly said she was interested in the top job. Carcieri, a Republican, must leave office after finishing his second term in January 2011.

Former Sen. Lincoln Chafee, an independent, and Republican Rep. Joseph Trillo are also considering running for governor.

Anyone who votes for this pathetic excuse of a Lt. Gov. should be taken over the border and shot.  The position should be eliminated totally, and she should go live in Mexico.

She’s hedging her bets. I guess she doesn’t want to be the Democrat -in-charge when this whole thing grenades next election. If she’d won, who would the legislators blame when the bill comes due?
Governor C was more than willing to take the popularity hit for what was needed but they still couldn’t pull the trigger!

thank god….  I guess she couldn’t count on enough illegal immigrants to vote for her so she had to back out.

Can anyone tell me what she does anyway?  What is her salary?  Can we eliminate this position or at least make it a part-time job ....say like our public school teachers!!
