RI will vote on trimming name to cut slavery tie

» 24 Comments | Post a Comment

PROVIDENCE—Rhode Island voters will decide next year whether to shorten the state’s longest-in-the-nation formal name because of its association with slavery.

House lawmakers approved a resolution Wednesday calling for a statewide referendum on whether to trim “Providence Plantations” from the state’s official name. The vote will be held during the general election in November 2010.

Senate lawmakers earlier approved the legislation.

Officially, Rhode Island is called “The State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations.“ Some African-Americans have argued that name conjures up painful images of slavery in a coastal state whose captains once grew wealthy off the slave trade.

Historians have argued the phrase “plantations” refers only to colonial settlements, not farms using slave labor.

First off, I am glad to see that basically everybody who has posted on here realizes that this bill is such a waste of time and taxpayer money! This gives me hope that the bill will not pass.

Second, the reason why these idiotic politicians (local, state, and federal government) are elected is because they know how to get the attention of poorly educated and jobless minorities and the ignorant fools who support and sympathize with them. Most of these people do not pay taxes, at least not with their own money, and also do not pay for the roofs over their heads, food in the stomachs, and clothes on their backs. So of course, they are going to elect some imbecile who has their best interest at heart but not the best interest of hard working taxpayers. However, before these people can vote for these politicians, these politicians have to run “get everyone to vote campaigns” that target these groups of people. By the way, that is how our current president became our president.

The problem is that people are being encouraged to vote but they are not being encouraged to become informed about politics and to make intelligent decisions when it comes to supporting candidates. Of course, if that were to happen not only will these politicians who think it’s okay to cater to a fraction of the population not get elected but our whole political system would collapse because hard working, middle class citizens would realize how bad they are being screwed by their government officials.

Another problem is that these minority groups have been catered to for way too long. First, off may be the ancestors of some white people may have done the ancestors of black people wrong but why should I have to pay for the mistakes that other people made before I was even born? Second, slavery was abolished over 150 years ago, money was handed out, black people have equal rights and equal opportunities (even though they may not use them), and there is black history month. Let us not forget that nowadays anybody in a minority group can get things handed to them a lot easier than any white person. For example: welfare along with any government aid of any type, jobs, money for education, and whatever else they feel they should get. Guess who has to pay for it??? Hard working taxpayers!!! Why??? Because the majority of them are white.

Anyway, the point I am trying to make is that it is time to stop catering to one group of people over the other. It is also time to stop blaming one group for society’s problems and to stop holding that one group responsible for everyone else.

I am not trying to stereotype anyone or any particular group of people. I’m also not being “racist”, I do not mean to say that all minorities are poorly educated and on welfare but that the majority of poorly educated and those who receive welfare are minorities. Look around everyone!!! Because this is the way it is. Research it, go visit a neighborhood for people who are low income or have no income, or go to a government office where taxpayer money is handed over mostly to people who choose not to work without a second thought.

All of this is why time and money is being wasted on this nonsense. Sure, it would be nice if the time and money being used for consideration on changing the state name was used to fix the economic mess and to find jobs for the 13% of Rhode Islanders who are unemployed. But that won’t happen because it’s more beneficial to minorities who feel that they have this sense of entitlement to live off of taxpayer money and these crackpot politicians who support, campaign, and rally for these people feed right into that sense of entitlement because that is how they get elected. And why would these particular minorities support anyone or anything that will help fix the economic mess our state is in? They were already not working, they were already receiving government aid, and they have known how to play the system long before many hard working, middle class people ended up unemployed and new to learning how to collect from the government.

Don’t we have enough on our plate right now to be wasting our time and $$ on this?  Aren’t people without jobs, shelter, food and health care?

This truly is a waste of time.

We should NOT even consider changing the name.

This is a red herring and a test by the “progressives” aka “liberals” aka “left wingers” aka “socialists” to attempt to control the masses.

To see what they can get away with.

They are already seemingly getting away with stealing from those who earned it to give to those that did not!!!

I assure that won’t last for long!!!

This is the name of our state:

RHODE ISLAND AND PROVIDENCE PLANTATIONS

And it will stay that way!!!  Just wait until “WE THE PEOPLE” vote on it!

If you don’t like it, MOVE!!!

OWVStore—Your comment started out with this sentence, word for word, as expressed on THIS site and to the commenters on it:

“WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE!!!“

Your comment wasn’t said to the legislators or to the idiots who are pushing this change, it was expressed to US.

Pardon me for misunderstanding you, but you have got to learn how to effectively express yourself—you obviously don’t know how right now.

BTW, I don’t drink Dunkin Donuts swill—and I’m not a Rhode Islander.  I hail from the Kommonwealth of Taxachusetts!

Hey Smitty? Obviously like a typical Rhode Islander, you obviously have not had enough Dunkin Donuts coffee yet.Go get some first, then if you would re-read my comment it says < Payy attention politicians..> Not < pay attention citizens > As I defened the citiziens of this < cough > great state I was born and raised in. It also goes on to say to our elected politicians: < You should be concerned with more pressing issues that effect the daily lives of RI tax payers!>

OWVStore—lets turn that around a minute—WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU???

How dare you tell us discussion of a topic is a waste of time—or petty!

YOU are as bad as those who want the name changed—You’re in effect saying “Do things my way or not at all!“

If you want to b*tch—don’t do it at us—do it to the legislators that are wasting ALL our times even considering such a name change!

WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE!!! We have so much more pressing issues to deal with in our PRESENT DAY lives than to wonder about the historical preservance of one of the states original names. Payy attention politicians.. HOW DARE YOU WASTE OUR TIME WITH SUCH A PETTY THING! You should be concerned with more pressing issues that effect the daily lives of RI tax payers!Lets waste more black in and paper and put our states debt furher in a whole… Or are you using the $3,000 fine monies from the Pawtucket Bridge to help fund this? You know, I’m really getting sick and tired of our elected politicians acting before they think! This is only 1 example to why our population continues to dwindle! Who voted the Govenor in? Twas not I!
