Published: July 15, 2009
PROVIDENCE—Rhode Island is receiving $360,000 in federal grants to help prevent underage drinking.
U.S. Sen. Jack Reed said Wednesday that the money can go toward a variety of programs, including giving funds to local police for enforcement and alcohol purchase surveys.
It can also provide help to cities and towns for strategies to enforce underage drinking laws.

The grants are part of a U.S. Department of Justice underage drinking enforcement program.
Reed, a Rhode Island Democrat, said in a statement that the grant is an investment in the health and safety of Rhode Island’s youth.

What a waist!!
That money could be used to create jobs or fix the pot holes.
We have serious issues!
good luck teens will always drink no matter what, how about feeding the needy? selfish politicians who want nothing other than to further their career’s with useless propaganda wake up people!
I agree with the posters, what a waste of tax dollars.I’m from Taxachusetts and government and law enforcement(oxymoron)always ,it seems take the path of least resistance(e.g.instead of catching speeders in Taunton they use a dummy-solar powered electronic radar to clock speeds and educate the public, how lame).Teaching children right from wrong and the right choice should start with good parenting, church, schools, etc. The government is using stimulus dollars for non-job creation and this money from day one doesn’t have a paper trail.Nothing changes, different day, same old BS.
well said everyone….responsibility should fall to the parents….pay more attention to your kids and these things will take care of themselves, the money would be better spent elsewhere…..there are people starving in this state and THIS is more important?
and to ppm1twic - rolfmao! perfect.
360k woooooo…watch out youngsters…we might hire three more officers for the whole state of RI on that budget increase…woohooo…
It really is a joke the way the government spends…
Semi-Arffi don’t ever give up on change man…we cannot stand by watching our country rot from the inside out…we all have the right to change what we see, but most of us are too lazy to do anything about it…its a joke, but its a joke because we let it be a joke…we have all the power…
TiredofRI: Kids run the household because parents are too busy to give two thoughts to really teaching thier own children…I mean, isn’t that the schools job? Isn’t that the counselors job? Isn’t that the governments job?...of course the answers are a resounding NO, but when you start relying on the government to do everything you are automatically trading in quality for weakness in any area…parenting is no different…I heard my son talking to his friends outside saying “my teacher is mad, but really what can she do to me?“...when he came upstairs I told him, the teacher may not be able to do anything…but let me tell you something, you just signed your home schooling ticket, and see if you pull that with me boy…he’s gonna be in the for old school lessons of a lifetime…hehehehh poor kid…
What a waste of money. What are parents for? The country is broke and we’re spending money on this? Give the money to the Highway Dept. and fix the dern roads!
Send all the money to Barrington.
I don’t believe they are talking just about 18-20 yr old kids. Take a look at the kids 13 - 17 who are drinking having under age parties. I think the parents should have more control over their kids. It’s BS to hear a kid tell a parent I’m going to call DCYF. Well you know what go ahead see if it’s any better than the life you have at home. I doubt it. Parents also need to stand up & be parents not your kids best friend. They have to earn your trust you don’t just give it. You have a right to know where your kids are use that right. I speak as a single mom who was raised by a single mom when my dad died very young. My mom took no crap I wouldn’t dare come home drunk even when I turned of age. The old saying goes you live under my roof you live by my rules.
OK let me get this straight. Let’s spend 360k to stop mostly 18-20 year old (Adults) from drinking alcohol? Oh, but make sure they’re well prepared for when we send them off to WAR! This country is so backwards that I don’t even think it’s worth bothering to try to fix now.
What a waste of money. What are parents for? Go back to the old school ways where the parents/parent ran the household not the kids.
