Final vote expected on RI indoor prostitution ban

PROVIDENCE—Rhode Island lawmakers expect they will finally close a loophole allowing indoor prostitution during the last day of a special session.

All states except Rhode Island and parts of Nevada now ban paid sex in private.

The state Senate was expected to vote Thursday on legislation making indoor prostitution a misdemeanor crime punishable by a maximum of one year in prison. House lawmakers approved the legislation Wednesday.

Besides dealing with the prostitution loophole, the General Assembly has approved a statewide referendum on whether to delete the phrase “Providence Plantations” from the state’s formal name over its association with slavery.

Another bill approved Wednesday would require elections to select interim U.S. senators instead of allowing the governor to select a temporary replacement.

who really cares if someone wants to sell their a$$ for money….People are still going to buy it….The morons in the General Assembly should have legalized it like Vegas and taxed it…
They have a law on the books that states no casino, yet Twin River advertises itself as a casino on the radio and TV all the time….

From the public opinion polls I have seen the overwhelming majority of Rhode Islanders oppose a ban on indoor prostitution. Here we go again, the Moral Minority projecting THEIR values (or lack thereof) on the majority while the GA jumps on the self righteous bandwagon to try to validate their existence.
Instead of wasting your time and our taxes, why not address some Real issues like economic development, rampant unemployment, cronyism and graft, gross government inefficiency, dwindling tax rolls, ETC>
Next election I’m voting for ANYONE NOT an incumbent!!

On August 6th and 9th in 1945 we melted two cities in Japan killing 110 thousand people in 10 seconds. Another 100 thousand died later. We would have more reason to stop VJ day than change our heritage.

You know? We have full time trouble and part time legislators. After a prolonged summer break ??  There interest is indoor prostitution and Providence “Plantations”.

Are they not embarrassed that in three colleges in England. Economics classes use us…. “Rhode Island” as an example of how not to run a Government. That our whole country is watching us and wondering how we can do the things we do. Now it is most likely that they will welcome binding arbitration that will cost us more. It’s a travesty that this body who are seen as the poster children of bad government has the ultimate say so, over our Governor.

The phrase ‘smacks of slavery’?  I think not—and if those lawmakers even bothered to look to the references, they would find it did not, either.

For cryin; out loud—that was over a hundred and fifty years ago!  Those bowbs seem to think slavery is coming back.

Deny history and you’re bound to repeat it.  Recognize it for what it was and remember it—keep the remembrances as well—they vow that it will never happen again.  That is the only way it WON"T be repeated.
