WORCESTER, Mass.—Gov. Deval Patrick said Thursday he plans up to 2,000 state job cuts but will spare local aid and education funding threatened by a $600 million hole in the state budget.

The governor outlined his plan to a business group in Worcester.

Patrick said the state needs $35 million in union contract concessions to avoid some of the projected job cuts, which could begin as soon as next week. He said the state is negotiating with unions but that “we cannot talk indefinitely.“

Patrick said he will cut about $277 million from executive offices he controls, and is asking the Legislature for authority to make $75 million in cuts to legislative, judicial and other state departments.

He’s also proposing a tax amnesty program to bring in revenue.

My view of this governor just went up somewhat.  He is FINALLY doing something about the wasteful state departments and their bloated payrolls.

Although I’m not a big fan of cities and towns that beg state aid for bugetary items that are NOT state of federally mandated, in these times, if it has to be done…..

Finally, Governor Patrick, I’m able to say ‘good job’ to you with a somewhat clear conscience.
