Panel: Lower R.I. income tax rates

PROVIDENCE—An advisory panel has recommended lowering Rhode Island’s personal income tax rates and reducing or eliminating corporate taxes.

The findings came Wednesday from a group assembled by Gov. Don Carcieri to review the state’s tax policy amid a recession and budget crisis. Carcieri has blamed the tax system for driving away business.

The majority of the panel supported lowering the top personal income tax rate from 9.9 percent to 5.5 percent. A flat tax for top earners and other tax credits would be eliminated, meaning some of the rich could pay more.

The panel said it would support applying the sales tax to more goods and services only if the rate was reduced.

Carcieri has not decided whether to accept the recommendations.

@sparky.
How are they raising taxes on people making less than $100m? How are they lowering it for people making more than $100m? They are lowering it for all people and companies.

Did you even read the article? What about the following quote “ A flat tax for top earners and other tax credits would be eliminated, meaning some of the rich could pay more.“ don’t you understand.

These rich fat cats are the ones that employ people in RI. We need to lure more rich fat cats to RI from other states so they create more jobs here. Lowering the taxes is a great idea.

If you are going to post, please say something that shows you have some intelligence.

This is exactly what needs to be done.  We need to make this state more attractive to industry.  Take a ride through our state and just look at all the closed factories that used to employ thousands of employees!  This is just one step that needs to be addressed.
But First we need to stop blaming a Governor so dominated by a legislature that has been in power so long, for the ills of the state.
God help us, we are being compared to Detroit!  Detroit!  What a disgrace, but we must be happy… we continue to elect all of these inept legislators.

Why don’t we fire all these people who came up with this plan? Oh wait they are rich fat cats appointed by gov. carcieri!
Wake up you dopes’s running this state, if you make it cheaper for the working people,than more will come here and companies will profit from that.
