New mayor elected in Worcester
Published: November 3, 2009
WORCESTER, Mass.—The state’s second-largest city will have a new mayor in January as Joseph O’Brien defeats incumbent Konstantina Lukes and two other candidates in Worcester.
Under Worcester’s city manager form of government, the mayor chairs the City Council and the school committee while the city manager serves as the city’s chief executive.
O’Brien is a former school committee member and an aide to U.S. Rep. James McGovern.
Lukes was the first woman to be elected mayor in Worcester. She succeeded Timothy Murray after Murray was elected lieutenant governor in 2006.
