PROVIDENCE—Senate Majority Leader Teresa Paiva-Weed is poised to become the first female Senate president in Rhode Island, winning the endorsement of Sen. William Walaska.

Walaska told NBC 10 News that he is withdrawing his own candidacy for the position and that he is now supporting Paiva-Weed in her effort to take over the top spot in the state Senate.

A caucus will be held next week to vote on the new leadership team in the Rhode Island Senate. The new General Assembly will convene in January.

The leadership battle was set up by the defeat of sitting Senate President Joseph Montalbano in Tuesday’s general election.

Paiva-Weed did not immediately return phone calls from NBC 10.
