PROVIDENCE—A lawyer for ex-Senate President William Irons said a criminal grand jury investigation into his client has ended.

Attorney John Tarantino said Thursday he received a letter from the U.S. Attorney’s Office telling him that Irons was no longer a target of the investigation. He told The Associated Press that Irons was pleased with the news.

Tarantino declined to comment further.

Federal prosecutors had been looking into Irons’s ties to the CVS pharmacy chain during his years in the General Assembly. He faces a separate inquiry by the state Ethics Commission on similar allegations.

The investigation was part of Operation Dollar Bill, a wide-ranging federal investigation into alleged corruption at the Rhode Island State House.
