PROVIDENCE—House lawmakers narrowly approved a bill requiring private companies to use the federal E-Verify database to check the immigration status of new hires.
House legislators voted 37-33 on Tuesday to approve the bill sponsored by state Rep. Jon Brien, a Democrat who said the legislation addresses a jobs issue.
Workplace and immigration advocates have argued the bill would implement a flawed system, put financial pressure on small businesses and discriminate against minorities.
The legislation now heads to the state Senate, where it stalled last year.
According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, 12 states require some form of E-Verify. Gov. Don Carcieri signed an executive order in 2008 that forces executive branch agencies and companies doing business with the state to use it.

This is GREAT!
However, they are only attacking businesses again. They should pass laws for the Government to hold themselves to the same standard.
1) Proof of identity and citizenship in order to vote (otherwise these politicians who voted for it will lose their next election campaign to illegals who vote against them)
2) Proof of citizenship in order to receive welfare and other State benefits
3) Report illegals to INS when arrested
4) No more free health care unless citizenship proved by e-verify
Finally—Politicians with some guts? Now all those illegal aliens and their families, will be packing their possessions and Heading for the “Sanctuary States” like California. The state of California will be very happy, with extra mouths to feed. They will have to try to pass another proposition, to raise higher taxes for the taxpayers there. NUMBERSUSA, JUDICIALWATCH
How do you consider it discrimination? I’m sorry I hate to see small business hurt in this economy, but whats right is right. If they want to come into this country then let them do it legal. Become a citizens call this your country and pay your taxes. Tired of people coming in from other countries and all they say is oh my country well then go back to your country or do it the right way.
