NEW BEDFORD, Mass.—Mayor Scott Lang outdistanced a field of four challengers and guaranteed himself a place in the Nov. 3 election.

Lang finished with 3,350 votes or 76 percent.

The incumbent mayor will face Fernando Coelho, who finished second with 448 votes or 10 percent.

On Monday, city officials said there seemed to be little interest in the race and it showed on Tuesday.

Of the 56,281 registered voters, only 4,387 voted in the preliminary election. That’s 7.9 percent.

Sean Burke finished third with 213 votes, followed by Catherine Gould with 192 votes and E. Michael Janson with 179 votes.
