WASHINGTON—Former Democratic Party chairman Paul G. Kirk Jr. has taken over for the late Edward Kennedy in the Senate.
Vice President Joe Biden swore in Kirk on Friday hours after a Massachusetts judge rejected a Republican request to delay it.
The GOP had argued that Democratic Gov. Deval Patrick exceeded his constitutional authority by appointing Kirk before a traditional 90-day legislative waiting period had expired. State lawmakers passed a bill this week giving Patrick the power to choose an interim senator.
Kirk gives Senate Democrats a filibuster-proof, 60-vote majority with the health care fight at a critical point.
He will serve in the interim post until voters pick a replacement in a Jan. 19 special election.

Getting back to the point. The honest answer for the race-to-the-finish-line in getting someone appointed in Kennedy’s seat is not noble at all. The Democrats know they need every single vote possible…and as influential as Kennedy was, he cannot vote now. It would be sweet irony if this guy decides to vote “nay” and give everyone a chance to sort out all the garbage in the health care bill. But I know that this guy is not an independent thinker. Oh well…I guess money does buy power.
President Obama and the Democrats want to have government compete with private healthcare providers. Do you think healthcare providers can compete with the Government.this will eventually eliminate them.
Socialized medicine does not provide free healthcare for everyone. Socialized medicine is not free. Socialized medicine, in fact, costs more for all citizens of a socialized medicine nation than it would if healthcare were in the free market. This is because of the usual government inefficiencies and corruption. Also, a vast number of people do not get healthcare in socialized medicine. Anytime something is free, it creates a huge demand, which outstrips the resources to produce the product. Therefore, with socialized medicine, healthcare is rationed. Rationing means long waits to get healthcare and denial of healthcare to many people.
I’m under the weather Kennetnnk, but not that far under.
Jimmy Carter pushed for and signed into law the Community Reinvestment Act which forced banks to lower their standards so that previously unqualified people could get a mortgage.
Bill Clinton then doubled-down on the Community Reinvestment Act and greatly lowered mortgage standards to allow a lot more unqualified borrowers to get loans.
Bill Clinton’s Attorney General, Janet Reno, then intimidated banks with threats of legal action if they did not give loans to unqualified borrowers who would not have the income to pay the loans back
A member of the Clinton administration, Franklin Raines was then put in charge of Fannie Mae by Bill Clinton. Fannie Mae bought up a majority of the bad loans made by banks to unqualified borrowers. Raines then falsified Fannie Mae financial reports so he could collect bonuses
which totaled over $90 million for 5 years.
Senator Chris Dodd, head of the Senatorial Financial Committee, suppressed efforts by President George W. Bush and congressional Republicans to rein in the corruption at Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.
He got a very favorable loan by a bank associated with Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. He got large political campaign contributions from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.
Barney Frank, head of the House of Representatives Banking Committee, also suppressed efforts by President George W. Bush and Congressional Republicans to investigate corruption at Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.
Barack Obama, while he was an attorney, filed law-suits against banks on behalf of ACORN in order to force banks to give loans to people who could not afford to pay them back. Obama, while he was a U.S. Senator, also suppressed efforts by President George W. Bush and Republican Congressmen to investigate and rein in Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.
There is no getting around the FACT that these are socialist policies.
Great for the chronicly unemployed and those who would rather sit in front of the tv. and…really great for the heads of government, (Ask Chris Dodd}
Thats not you and not me either.
I guess I’m arguing with the DNC, those comments are right out of their playbook. I wont go into details because you’ll come back with a lot of mumbo jumbo from your democratic talking points. I do want to say however that there is no crisis in health care this is trumped up to pass some stupid entitlement package we’ll be paying for for years and it will also go into debt just like all the other entitlements. The war we shouldn’t have fought set 25,000,000 Iraqi’s free but I guess that doesn’t mean anything to you or other democrats. The other war that Obama touts as the rightous one we’re having problems because he wont react. Remember 9/11/01 , I do and I don’t think we should live like its 9/10/01. You can have your hope and change I didn’t vote for it.
Vette
My taxes have been through the roof since Nixon was in office, you are so right both parties are guilty however the Republicans claim to be the fiscal conservatives and there not and thats not a trumped up scandle.
Spending growth in discretionary programs has accelerated in the last 10 years, especially during Bush’s two terms. Between FY2002 and FY2009, discretionary spending rose 96 percent check your civics Vette.
Discretionary spending and Entitlements are like you said two different animals Entitlements help people Discretionary are what the Republicans call pork spending and under the REPUBLICAN CONSERVATIVE GROUP that is the reasons they lost so many seats with todays technology voters see the spending and follow where the money goes and it is what it is,it is like no matter how many times Republican Wilson screams liar there is nothing in the Health Bill that covers Illegal Imirgrants .
So now we have three major issues going on two wars one we should have never been in a health care system that is crippling the american workers with some losing there homes because of getting sick old people in particular and a banking crisis and this all happened on Conservative Republican George W.Bush’s watch, now I know you are going to say this all happened from 2006 on and the Conservative Republicans in office had nothing to do with any of these problems it’s all the Democrats fault and they are the ones who are driving this country down however thew voters believe otherwise.
Peakes you say they had the chance to stop the financial crisis three years before it happened true just like they had the chance to stop it from 1974 to 2006 when Republicans held the majority but they didn’t want to regulate the Industry the Coservative Republican Ronald Reagan De-Regulated to free up money for his trickle down economics.
God Bless America
Oh and I can’t let this go.Yes it was Bushes outlay for the Bailout.
But president Obama (As a member of CONGRESS..along with the democrats protected Fannie and Freddy with a party line vote from being regulated after Alan Greenspan warned congress of the impending danger.
They had a chance to stop the carnage three years before it happend..and didn’t.
Kenn, your disitation is nice and the one thing you said which makes a lot of sense is entitlements do have a huge long term affect and what do you think this health care fiasco is??
Health care needs some work but not the introduction of a huge entitlement. The reason republicans lost in 2006 is the trumped up scandals and the left leaning members that were voted out. I hope you noticed all the democrats that won were fiscal conservatives. You enjoy your hope and change and when your taxes go through the roof dont come back and whine.
Ok Kennethnk,
Your right The Republicans have in fact ignored the Health care issue.
Your also right the Republicans don’t have the answers.
I contend that the Democrats don’t either…but..it’s going to happen.
Economists speculate huge tax increases
will hurt the already fragile economy.
We all have to admit congress itself is irresponible. And..arguments on either side are speculation looking back to what has happend in recent history on both sides of the isle.
Perhaps a new history can be written and… if after the smoke clears if the Democratic Congress will work with our President passed there own individual ambitions to correct these
issues. Then I’ll buy you a snow cone.
If not this could define a new history for all of us. One that our forefathers never intended.
Corgvett
Whats your point they had the majority in the senate and the house until three years ago we are now trying to get a health bill passed that has been ignored by the Republicans for to long thats one of the reasons they where voted out.
Bush increased discretionary outlays by an estimated 48.6 percent. The largest increase took place 2008 the
the $700 billion bailout of Enterprises Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae
during his eight years in office, President Bush spent almost twice as much as his predecessor, President Clinton.President Bush outspent both Reagan and Clinton put together.
To make matters worse, President Bush’s enactment of the Medicare prescription drug bill will make the coming fiscal crunch from entitlements much worse. Even though the budget was already deep into deficit and entitlements have huge long-term financing shortfalls, Congress and President Bush enacted a new multi-billion entitlement program in December 2003—the biggest expansion in Medicare since its inception.I think we both agree Vette senate and house changed 2006.
Scandals prompted the resignations of Congressional Republicans House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, Duke Cunningham, Mark Foley, and Bob Ney. In the 2006 midterm elections check your civics, the Republicans lost control of both the House of Representatives and Senate for the 110th Congress to the Democrats. Exit polling suggested that Medical Insurance and corruption were key issues for many voters.Following the 2008 elections, the Republican party had suffered several significant defeats, losing control of the presidency and of congress. The 2006 midterm elections returned control of the House of Representatives to the Democrats for the first time since 1994. The Republicans also lost ground in the Senate, barely maintaining the 41 seats needed to sustain a filibuster. Many national polls of Republicans consider the party to be with no clear “leader”.
So Vett if you are trying to say the Republicans have the answers then lets just hear one because what they say and what they do are two different things and the American voters are sick and need Insurance NOW!!!
I would and did take My buddy OBAMA
and Biden over Mcann and Palin.
If you where buying into all that winking and hair flipping by Palin I think you need help in choosing leaders all we heard from her was Ghost stories and Lies and Mcann would swear to it.
At least now we have hope and the doom and gloom Republican party is weakening on a daily basis by there own irresponsible behavior the records don’t lie the Republicans do.
God Bless America.
Smitty I may not be that smart. But I’m not ignorant or nieve.I did make a mistake I meant 20 Billion.
Im not a Dem Or a Repub. When it comes to saving a mouse in San Francisco I pick the Democrats. When it comes to saving money, I choose no one in congress.
Fortune Magazine.
The crucial question about Obama’s agenda has always been whether it really will slow the disastrous rise in health-care spending, or actually increase it while hiding the real costs of the new system. On analyzing the bills, the conclusion is inescapable: Obama promises Americans what appears to be a bargain by heavily subsidizing their premiums. But the only way to pay for what’s really outrageously expensive coverage will be huge tax increases, especially on the same middle class that’s being wooed as the chief beneficiary of reform.
