House lawmakers meet on RI’s tanking economy

PROVIDENCE—State lawmakers are debating plans ranging from auto racing to consolidating municipal services to steer Rhode Island through a bleak financial crisis.

The proposals were raised Thursday during a closed-door caucus of Democratic lawmakers convened by House Speaker William Murphy.

He has called it a first step to dealing with a failing economy that has driven unemployment to 13 percent and produced massive state budget deficits.

Rep. Peter Palumbo, a Cranston Democrat, said each lawmaker was allowed to present their ideas for economic development. After emerging from the meeting, Palumbo said they discussed encouraging auto racing matches and the need to hear more frequently from state business leaders.

Murphy said he opposed raising taxes to balance the faltering state budget.

Alke
I won’t call you a Republican I promise your worse and I never bashed the Republicans in my last post saying that Cheney and Bush lied I just put out the truth if that is bashing the Republican leaders for the job they did then so be it they both lied.
You claim to be an Independent you travel the easiest road , take no stand on your beliefs or morals because you have none, you agree to the most popular statements because you have no backbone and make no stand on issues it must be terrible to live like that always looking to say the most popular thing.I think you Like most of the Independent Voters seperated from the Republican party because of there lack of leadership and are now looking to hold on to anything that sounds good.
My Federal tax has gone down twelve dollars a week and my water bill has gone down three hundred dollars a year and my tax on my house has also dropped one hundred eighty dollars after I appealed.
If you noticed in my last post I never defended the Democratic legeslators for there job I just stated the facts as I see them and I do know we would be worst off if Republicans where in office. Look at Carcieri and Bush the both of them terrible leaders.

I worked for a major company here in R.I for twenty five years and for the last five our company got huge tax breaks to stay however nothing could be done for the Insurances or energy to stay competitive, now being part of this negotiation other major companies where also involved have also left the State so you can blame the Democrats for tax and spend and I will believe what I lived through .
God Bless the Democratic Party and help guide them to do what is right for America.

mpd..as long as kenneth can bash Republicans, there doesn’t need to be logic.  Have your taxes gone down because mine sure haven’t.  In fact due to our incompetent, moronic, DEMOCRAT general assembly, my state and local taxes have never been higher.
And before you say it, kenneth, no, I am not a Republican.

K-man, your logic escapes me.  If we’ve given such generous tax breaks to businesses, why can’t we get them to set up shop in Rhode Island?  Insurance costs are high in every state, not just little Rhody.  Your democratic legislators are incompetent and this state couldn’t be in worse shape…unless they get re-elected!

444 you got the solution and yes you sure are simple, businesses in this state have been given some of the best State tax breaks in the country we need a fair tax system not a one sided system.
Carcieri like Bush gave all his cronies huge tax breaks with the so called promise for jobs in this state, the companies got the tax breaks but we didn’t get the jobs.
High price for Insurances medical and Workers Compansation is the number one reason most companies have left or are leaving this State.
Our State has the highest Insurance premiums in the country yeah we don’t need reform thats what the Insurance industry wants you to believe blame it on taxes.
High energy Bills is number two again the Northeast is one of the highest in the country again who is making the money there.
The third was wages, people can’t live on a low minimum wage and live in R.I the cost of living is the highest in the country for some of the reasons I just mentioned.
I havn’t seen my taxes go up since Bush was in office if anything my income tax has gone down.
And the fact is Your so called Republican President George Bush put us in this economic mess we are in put us into two wars and one he and his money hungry Vice President lied to attack Iraq tell me Cheney’s company isn’t making money there. Both Wars unfunded wich drove the deficit to the highest in the history of the country.
George W Bush out spent His father and Bill Clinton combined he took office with billions in surplus.
My President has at least slowed the job loss and decreased my taxes and stopped this country from going into another great depression and God willing we will have a health insurance that is fair so we Rhode Islanders can at least compete for work in this State again.
I wouldn’t be bragging about being a Republican it’s party membership has dropped to it’s lowest in history less then twenty five percent of voters claim to be Republican now.
God Bless My President

The solution is simple:  make the state a more attractive place in which businesses are willing to relocate.  Reduce taxes and this will happen.  More people working, paying more taxes with more money to spend.

The legislators will always take the easy way out by raising existing and implementing new taxes.  That’s why Rhode Island is ranked next-to-last for a business friendly climate.

Why in God’s name would Democrats be meeting to figure this out?  Their history is tax and spend and their president is leading the way!  They don’t understand economics in this type of recession and they certainly can’t solve the existing problems.

Why is Rhode Island going to be the last state to recover from this recession?  Obviously because the legislators in this state are in way over their heads and have no idea what their doing.

Voters, please remember this in the next election or else things will not only not improve, they’ll get worse…if that’s possible!!!
