Central Falls puts mayoral candidate on ballot

CENTRAL FALLS, R.I.—Central Falls Mayor Charles Moreau will face a challenger in the November election.

The city’s Board of Canvassers decided Friday that Hipolito Fontes will appear as a candidate on the ballot.

The decision came after U.S. District Court Judge William Smith struck down a city rule this week banning residents from signing the nomination paperwork of more than one candidate.

The rule also specified that when voters sign multiple nomination papers, the signatures only count for the candidate who files first.

Central Falls officials earlier said those rules should have kept Fontes off the ballot.
