Carcieri: Salary of Senate chief of staff too high

» 6 Comments | Post a Comment

PROVIDENCE—Gov. Don Carcieri has faulted the incoming Senate president for hiring a chief of staff with a salary up to $135,000 during a part-time legislature.

Senate Majority Leader M. Teresa Paiva-Weed selected former Sen. Thomas Coderre on Thursday as her chief of staff. A spokesman for Paiva-Weed said Coderre’s exact salary is still being negotiated but will fall between $125,000 to $135,000.

The Democratic caucus has endorsed Paiva-Weed as its candidate to become Senate president, virtually assuring her formal election next month. One of her first challenges will be closing a nearly $360 million budget deficit for the year ending in June.

Coderre will make less money than the man he replaces.

Talk about the POT calling the KETLE black!!!

Donnie’s staff is not exactly underpaid here.
The whole issue is disgusting to those of us who know what and live on a BUDGET.
Nice to see the GOOD OLD BOY network is alive and well on Smith hill but that’s what WE get for not voting them all out of office and RECALLING Donnie Boy

Hello again Ray, You know, you just may be right-on there. A great many voters hoped things would be better the second time around. I accepted my position within the minority group that lost and, considered His Excellency the lesser of two evils. As for migration, well, from where I sit RI does a darn good job in human services, compared to many states, even considering our small size. However, according to commentary, the latest scheme, pay as you go mileage use for infrastructure repairs has caused a great deal of “itchy feet”. We will see, wont we. Ray, have a great day and a Happy Holiday Season.

I lived in RI for 28 years. I just moved last year. I like your last comment about the election. That is the same thing everyon was saying last time when he was re-elected. And guess what, if the poor and unfortunate were to move to another state. They wouldnt be poor and unfortunate anymore. Rhode Islanders need to realize that there are far more opportunities out there.

Hello Ray, It sounds like you live in a good place for the poor and unfortunate to avoid. We who live in “Little Rhody” are, even in bad times, used to better treatment. Also, what was commented about is not a single, isolated incident but one of a series. We’ll work it out in the democratic tradition, come next election day.

Jacob1, you do realize that most states do not give anything for SSI. You just get what the US government gives out. RI gives about $56 a month in addition to the US government amount. That is $56 dollars more than the state that I live in.

Our Governor seems to have a Holiday Season fetish/fixation on earnings/salaries/benefits. Among the most vulnerable in our society, those receiving SSI, were today notified that their benefits were reduced by approx. $20, the same average ammount of the SS cost of living increase. Perhaps he should consider setting an example, by decreasing his own salary, or maybe even foregoing it. BAH HUMBUG, Governor Scrooge.
