PROVIDENCE—A Rhode Island civil liberties group is accusing the state of failing to process food stamp applications in a timely manner.
The state branch of the American Civil Liberties Union said in a federal lawsuit Monday that the state is routinely missing the 30-day deadline set by the federal government to process food stamp applications.
It says the state’s also missing the 7-day deadline to provide food stamps to eligible households.
Steven Brown, the ACLU’s executive director, says Rhode Island’s financial problems are making the situation worse.
The complaint names Gary Alexander, the director of the Department of Human Services. Phone messages left for him and for the governor’s spokeswoman were not immediately returned.
State offices are closed Monday.

this state is garbage the people who need things cant even get it people are starving in the streets and they take there sweet time, its dispicable.
I can’t stand the ACLU. They almost always end up on the wrong side, but to them it is the right side.
So why doesn’t ACLU pony up some bucks to hire more clerks to process the applications? They know there are no consecquences to be suffered by the State even if they win their suit. It is all political posturing and a waste of taxpayer money for the State to defend itself. Hooray for the lawyers.
