The New York Times reported Tuesday that U.S. Sen. Jack Reed, D-R.I., is no longer on U.S Sen. Barack Obama's short list of potential vice presidential candidates.

The newspaper reported that Obama has narrowed his list to three people and that he could announce his choice as early as Wednesday.

The New York Times reported that Obama’s short list of potential running mates has been narrowed to U.S. Sen. Evan Bayh of Indiana, Gov. Tim Kane of Virginia and U.S. Sen. Joseph Biden, Jr. of Delaware.

Reed had been considered by many as a possible Obama choice. Reed has steadfastly maintained he was not interested in the position. Reed has said he intends to continue to serve as the senior senator from Rhode Island.

Reed’s name has also been tossed about for a cabinet position, possibly as defense secretary, if Obama were to be elected president.
