The Republican challenger to Democratic U.S. Rep. James Langevin is proposing a series of debates leading up to the November election.

Mark Zaccaria, a former North Kingstown Town Council member, says he wants to debate Langevin 20 times, once in each community in the district.

Zaccaria in a letter to the congressman said he's willing to work around Langevin's schedule, and asked that the two begin planning the events immediately.

Langevin's office on Tuesday confirmed receipt of the letter. Spokeswoman Joy Fox says there will be debates, but added that the exact number and where they will be held is yet to be determined.

Langevin is seeking a fifth term.
