GOP challenges ruling on prospective candidates

PROVIDENCE -- The Republican Party in Rhode Island is asking the state's highest court to lift a ruling that prevents five prospective candidates from running for the General Assembly.

The state Board of Elections ruled earlier this month that GOP Chairman Giovanni Cicione should have submitted the names of the candidates to local elections officials rather than to the Office of the Secretary of State.

But Cicione claims it's just a case of political gamesmanship.

The appeal asks that the candidates be given 10 days to gather necessary signatures to appear on the ballot.

A spokesman for the judiciary said the state Supreme Court has received the case but that there is no indication of when it might be heard.

The state's primary is scheduled for Sept. 9.
