WESTERLY, R.I. – President Barack Obama is being immortalized in beads.

Fourth-grade students from around the country used small plastic beads to create a giant photo of the president.

The project will eventually measure 9 by 11-and-a-half feet and will be presented to the president on his birthday on Aug. 4.

When completed, it is expected to set a Guinness World Record for largest photo mosaic in the world.

Students from the Bradford School in Westerly took part in the project, which is also being assembled in a warehouse in Westerly.

The project uses PhotoPearls beads and their CEO, Peter Stambeck, is in Rhode Island to help with the assembly.

Hey Claire, just a follow up about your comment on the kids answering a simple civics question.  On the radio today, there was one of those “man non the street” things.  The question was ‘within 100 years, when was the Civil War’...only 1 child was even close.  I know they only asked like 15, but for pete sakes…THE CIVIL WAR?????

I love dynamites and I grew up in Smithfield so I used to head up to Woonsocket with my parents to shop but the one thing I will say is I agree with Jay70 that place is no longer a 1/4 of the city it used to be. I really feel bad for the people who live there and have for a long time. They have watched that city go down the tubes fast. I remember being able to go to autumn fest and feel safe and comfortable but now it’s full of thugs and morons. I am also trying to figure out what this president has done that so many people feel he is the savior all he is doing is printing money and giving every special interest group everything they want. He is trying to please everyone and it doesn’t work that way you cant just keep printing money…..we are screwed.

Beading Obama?  Where were those who thought up these programs when Bush was president?  I believe to my very last Swarovski bead that this ridiculous project would never have gotten off the ground.  Politics DO NOT BELONG in the classroom.  There are so many noteworthy people that could be “beaded”.  If youngsters got together and said “lets bead Spongebob Squarepants” would administration have allowed it?  Again, my last Swarovski bead says “not on your life”.  This is where our problems are only just now surfacing.

Hi Claire - Well done on the dynamite cookoff!  Most of my in-laws are from North Kingstown so not used to dynamites, and I cook ‘em up for them every so often.

While I am obviously no fan of BHO, I do agree with you on respect.  I also find it unfortunate that respect was certainly lacking for his predecessor and to a lesser extent Gov. Palin when she ran for vice-president.

All the best.

On many notes I agree with you Kilroy.  Perhaps him simply because he’s the President of the United States.  Just a thought but how many kids are out there that can’t even answer a simple civic question.  He may or may not have been my choice but he is the President and I think that while he’s President he deserves the respect that he is due.  We all have our flaws, he’s human and I’m sure he’s doing the best he knows how.  The point of this all is, it’s a bunch of kids having fun, being creative and learning about the President of our United States.  By the way, a little tidbit of information, I came in 6th out of 62 for the dynamite cookoff Woonsocket had! yes I do remember walking down Main St when it was a one way!! LOL

Great post alkeryia!  I’m guessing this is a project was begun by some liberal chucklehead who equated BHO with patriotism.  It couldn’t be farther from the truth.

Claire, nothing wrong with Woonsocket.  I grew up two towns over in Burrillville and remember the old days with Christmas shopping on Main Street and dynamites at Vermettes.  Miss that place.  Anyway, as for the mosaic of BHO, why him?  That’s all I ask.  He hasn’t done anything to merit a mosaic of him.  If they’re to be patriotic, how about an American flag or an American eagle?  Also, there are so many Presidents I’d put ahead of him in meriting this honor - Washington, Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, FDR, JFK and Reagan to name a few.

I’ve been reading these posts and frankly don’t understand the obsession Jay has with Woonsocket.  I live in Woonsocket and I’m not on drugs, nor do I have a dog that attacks others. I’m a professional woman who takes offense to your comments.  Here is a story about kids doing something creative and artistic and yet everything you seem to say is negative.  So very sad for you.  Perhaps accepting individuals for who they are instead of where they come from or their differences might create a more loving person who is liked and respected. Anyway, just joined this so I could comment on what appears to be a very negative personality.

It never ceases to amaze me….Pres. Bush messed all this up singlehandedly, and Obama is going to fix it all, singlehandedly. Neither is true.

Also, if the children wanted to make the world’s biggest mosaic, there are plenty of symbols of American pride to choose from.  This isn’t indoctrination my butt.  It is also why my kids do not attend public school.

We’re screwed.

Jay70 I agree 100% with you. Everyone is putting this president on a pedistal so high and what has he done yet???? Well he’s given away hundreds of billions of our dollars. You are also correct on Clinton and Frank. Obama blamed Bush for the oil and gas going sky high and said once Bush is out oil will be cheap and not go up. So how could it be so that our prices went from $37 a brl in nov to $72 today and everyone is out of work. We can all beat this subject to death going back and forth. To the kids doing the bead design POWER to them and GOOD luck in the project but next time the teacher should pick someone worthy to make.  $0.02

For JP5878, please explain how Bush gave us a “bad name?“  That’s pretty vague, but I’ve come to expect that from liberals.  Also, please explain how Bush got us into the financial difficulty.  This implies Congress and prior administrations had absolutely nothing to do with it.  And please don’t try to silence jay70 - he is free to speak his mind just as much as you are.

As for homer, if the children are truly proud of their country, and I don’t doubt they are, maybe their teacher should direct them to making a beaded American flag, or a beaded Statue of Liberty.  Why choose BHO?  What has he done?
