CUMBERLAND, R.I.—School officials said additional security will be at Cumberland High School on Friday after suspicious graffiti forced the cancellation of afternoon and evening activities at the school the day before.
Superintendent Donna Morelle said three resource officers will be at the school.
Morelle said students are prohibited from carrying pocketbooks and backpacks to school on Friday. Essential items are to be brought to school in a clear, plastic bag.
Morelle said students were notified of the extra precautions at school. She said a reverse phone call and an e-mail were also sent.
Morelle said all extracurricular activities for Friday are to go on as scheduled.
Morelle said police and fire crews conducted a search of the school on Thursday night and nothing was found.
According to Morelle, similar suspicious graffiti was found Monday and forced the evacuation of the school. She said students were dismissed 45 minutes to 1 hour early.
Morelle said police and fire crews searched the school and didn’t find anything.

I am a parent of a Burrillville high school student and we went through this all of last year we had at least 5 “situations” at our schools and i can understand how the CHS students and parents feel. One of the “situations” involved grafetti at my sons elementry school and we were not told anything and all my son said to me is “mommy why does somebody want to blow up my school”? and the last “situation” was at the high school where all we (the parents) knew was all the rumors coming from the students but i will tell you that was the scariest. The rumor was that there was a hit list on my space and there would be a “columbine shooting at the school” naming several students and teachers but yet again we got no information except a phone call saying that all efforts were being made to protect our children. I was livid at this and I myself went to the Burrillville police dept and school administration to find out what the heck was going on. Come to find out thankfully it was just a rumor ball that started with a conversation among some students that was overheard by other students and taken the wrong way. So I feel that keeping everything hush hush from parents and students only helps fuel the rumors that are created which creates more fear in people.
was the suspicious graffiti a slice of ham on the cafiteria wall? when I went there in 2003 somebody taped a slice of ham on the caf wall in the main building and by the time it fell off the wall it was growing teeth because the schools janitorial staff couldn’t clean it. it makes me so happy to see all my tax payer money that went into that school has been a total and utter waste.
Oh, this takes me back to my days of high school. Bomb threats, shooting threats, and whatever else to create these situations.
I agree with the people on here who think that whoever attends this school and their parents should be in the know about what is going on. Who would feel comfortable being in a place where something is going on that could be harmful to you but you aren’t allowed to know what that something is??? That is absurd! I don’t think any kid should of stepped into that school without them and their parents knowing of any possible danger.
Chances are it some stupid teens playing a prank so school can be out and everyone can be worried unnecessarily. We all know how hilarious and entertaining it can be to get everyone in an uproar over nothing and waste time and money for a good laugh and time off from school (note the sarcasm).
I hope the people who are responsible for this and any other similar situation read this: GROW UP, YOUR ACTIONS EFFECT OTHER INNOCENT PEOPLE, AND LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICIALS HAVE BETTER THINGS TO DO THAN TO PLAY GAMES BECAUSE OF IDIOTS LIKE YOU!!!
Perhaps it was a bomb drawing. Who knows.
I am a parent of a student at CHS. My daughter is home today because of what is going on at the school. As parents, we are never informed of what is really going on. Many of us feel this way.
When it comes to endangering my childs life I have every right to know.
I too am very surprised by the media blackout on this. The first I heard of this was on the radio - and this has been a situation since Monday? Even with the evacuation on Monday - there was no announcement. Very strange. Does not help to quell fears.
Kyle, you seem like a pretty smart guy. Very well said. What a shame.
I am a student at CHS and this is getting a bit out of hand this week. I am staying home today, as I did not want to take part in the “plastic bag” festival going on there today. The school never tells us what is going on, just that there is a “situation” and “suspicious graffiti”. I really don’t care if they “cannot” specify what the problem reall is. If I am expected to go there and endanger my life, I want to know what it is that is posing a threat to my safety. This isn’t pre-school. We are all old enough to handle the truth. Even after investigations take place and are finalized, we still never find out the truth. Usually, these things never even make it to the news. They like to keep everything under the carpet. Thanks Team Ten for exposing how bad our school really is.
