SMITHFIELD, R.I.—There’s a new addition to Smithfield High School: a historic diner from the 1930s that needs a lot of work.

The project will have students cooking, in more ways that one, for years to come.

NBC’s R.J. Heim reports.

This is a fantastic idea and will turn into something wonderful that these kids can be proud of.

What is unfortunate is that Johnny B’s Diner in Cranston was closed after the city bought the property for a new library. To this day, nothing has been done with the property and the diner itself is rotting away at Cranston East High School - where IT was supposed to be rehabbed into a work-study project for the school.

The city not only closed a local business, but drove others out of the area. For what, NOTHING!
