NEWPORT, R.I.  - Salve Regina University is celebrating its new president.

Sister Jane Gerety will be inaugurated as the Newport institution’s seventh president on Friday during an outdoor ceremony on campus.

Gerety, who officially took over in July, succeeds Sister Therese Antone, who is now the 2,600-student university’s chancellor.

Gerety previously served as the executive board officer for Saint Joseph’s Health System in Atlanta.

Providence Bishop Thomas Tobin will preside over a celebratory Mass in the Ochre Court Chapel at 9 a.m.

Gov. Don Carcieri, U.S. Sen. Jack Reed and Newport Mayor Jeanne-Marie Napolitano are scheduled to attend.

Trustees Chairman Joseph DiStefano calls Gerety the “perfect choice” to lead the university.
