University of Rhode Island President David Dooley said layoffs and a mid-year tuition hike might be necessary to keep the school operating, the Providence Journal reported.

The school is facing state budget cuts of about $3.4 million.

Dooley’s comments were originally made earlier this week to the URI Student Senate.  He said no final decisions have been made.
