PROVIDENCE—The president of the Regional Government of the Azores is spending Memorial Day in Rhode Island.
Carlos Manuel Martins do Vale César and his wife, Luisa Maria, are scheduled to visit Rhode Island College on Monday. They’ll meet with seven students who will be traveling in July to the Azores, a group of Atlantic Ocean islands about 900 miles from Portugal.
Marie Fraley, associate director for the college’s Institute of Portuguese and Lusophone World Studies, says the month-long trip will give students the chance to connect with other parts of the Portuguese-speaking world.
César’s will also be visiting Brown University and the State House, and meeting with Gov. Don Carcieri and legislative leaders.
