BRISTOL, R.I.—Officials at Rhode Island’s only law school say a $250,000 gift from a prominent attorney will be used to boost free legal services to low-income residents.

The gift from attorney Mark Mandell will help cover the costs of running the Roger Williams University Law School’s Pro Bono Collaborative. The unique program facilitates collaborations between law firms, community organizations and law students.

The gift includes a challenge for others in the legal community to match the donation.

Mandell teaches trial advocacy at RWU and is on the law school’s board.

He said in a statement that the law school is a “beacon.“

University President Roy Nirschel said the gift is line with the school’s mission to create “globally aware, service-minded citizens.“
